Having trouble spotting critters at night? Become an eyeshine god with this one simple trick: physics!

Recommended torches

Any right angled lamp will do the trick; unfortunately a lot of great products are now hard to get or have been discontinued.

Other decision factors:

  • I prefer 18650 based lamps due to their lower weight and smaller size.
  • 18650 batteries are generally more affordable in comparison to 21700:
  • Always check Ozbargain/whirlpool for legitimate batteries and good deals
  • Both 18650 and 21700 based lamps should last a night or few on a single battery if left at around 260lm
  • Warm or neutral lights (4500 - 5000k) are better for combatting eye strain
  • Wurkkos lamp is definitely the best product for the price

Step by Step guide for headlamp modification    (e.g. Wurkkos HD20)

1- Make necessary snips of elastic head straps as above

2- Pull main head strap through adjustment buckle so you are left with three parts:
a. Main head strap
b. Lamp holder
c. Lamp

3- Pull Main head strap through the overhead strap loop as above, and feed strap through black buckle to tighten

4- Feed lamp through head lamp holder

5- Find a bit of cardboard and wedge it between lamp and holder as above so light points directly forward when seated on head.

6- When in use, seat light directly between your eyes, on the bridge of your nose.

Alternative modification By H. Hines

An alternate way of modifying the lamp is to get a piece of dowel (Or saw of an old broom handle), drill 4 holes into it, and secure the lamp with zip ties as shown below.

This modification allows the lamp to swivel up and down in the lamp holster and requires no cutting or rethreading of the original headlamp straps.

Happy Eyeshining!
