ID by process of elimination, as I’ve never seen this species before in this area, though it is the right habitat. It is not A. variegata, leaf shape and texture is wrong. This one is subtly hairy, if not ‘velvet’. Most images of fruiting individual; smaller individual not in flower, with some ‘sunburn’, is about 2 meters away. Area searched extensively but no other individuals found.
Update; many plants returned at this location and almost in bloom in mid-May 2019.
Part of mini bioblitz at Gus Engeling WMA. Approx 20 people split into 2 groups.
