I like this! Good job, Bianca! Have you seen any of these down here? (MPG shows them more in the Trans-Pecos...) Now, can you do one separating T. exacavata from scitior?? (Just kidding - I'm told they're inseparable except by dissection...)

@miriameaglemon the range on this species is very limited compared to most other species in this genus especially excavata & scitior. I've been working on a few of these, mostly because I wanted to know how many of these were actually possible in our area. It appears that there are 3: excavata, scitior, and crudelis. I'm still looking for key ID differences between scitior and excavata, but there is a lot of overlap in features. It would be easier if there were more known resources for scitior available! The four species I've made ID guides for so far I'm pretty confident in: volucris, psegmapteryx, crudelis, & repentis. Everything else I'm still trying to figure out. Thanks!

@biancajbanda I've gotten some good tips from the species Info pages on BugGuide, or even on some of the image pages where a discussion ensued; somewhere in there someone mentioned that scitior "tends" to have a whiter ST line in the hindwing, and that the PM line "tends" to swing up to join the median (?) band at the costa, but like you said, these features overlap. I also noticed that there's no longer a data point in MPG for scitior for the LRGV, so maybe someone determined that they don't actually show up here and all my "scitiors" are probably Excavated! On the other hand, MPG DOES have pardalis, repentis (although I think that's been disputed as well), and clientis, along with excavata and cruelis showing up here. The one and only pardalis I've ever had down here was a bug that Josh Rose (the ranger there at Bentsen when I moved out here) pointed out to me, so they do exist! Have fun with your ID guides - I look forward to seeing them, as they're very helpful!

@miriameaglemon there is an observation or two of one of the pardalis-clientis bunch for the valley. I'm still working on separating the two, but they don't seem to occur here regularly. It doesn't help that MPG uses the same photo for clientis and strigalis on their pages.

I've seen the info you were talking about on BG. I've mostly used the same thought process to look for potential scitiors on inat. There was a DNA research study on a group of BOLD moths showing that there was one scitior in a group of excavata that was collected from the valley. They all looked basically identical. It may be that I'll never be able to tell them apart! I have hope though. :)

I've not seen any valid repentis in the valley for inat, but I think someone had one on BG? I don't think it's a regular either.

@biancajbanda << It doesn't help that MPG uses the same photo for clientis and strigalis on their pages.>>

You're kidding! :-D I'll have to take a look at that! (Guess that's not the first time something like that has happened...)
