Xylocopa (Xenoxylocopa) inconstans Smith 1874

Female: Thorax above smooth and shining on the disk, the lateral margins closely punctured; a band of white pubescence behind the insertion of the wings, crossing the scutellum, also extending to the thoraxic sides (mesosomal pleurae) beneath the wings.
The first abdominal segment with white pubescence.
Wings very dark brown with a green and purple iridescence.
First metasomal tergite lacking a distinct invaginated acarinarium.
Head capsule greatly enlarged and massive.
(Bees in South Africa have always white bands, some bees north of the Cunene/Zambezi-line may have yellow bands)
Body length: 18-23 mm.

The colour of the thoraxic sides, the massive head capsule and larger size distinguishes X. inconstans from the white-banded from of X. caffra.

Male: Told by naked, black, patches on the sides of metasomal segments 3-5.

X. inconstans is common in NE South Africa, Zimbabwe and NW Namibia.
