This species is similar to Chrysops ciliaris (which has the dark bands on the abdomen divided).
Length 8 mm. Abdomen pale, with broad blackish bands, which only leave the ground-colour free on the posterior borders of the hind segments. Thorax black, with two grey stripes and some grey pubescence.
Wings clear, brown on the fore border, with a brown with transverse band only just reaching into the anal cell and not attaining the apex of the discal cell.
Distribution: from Sudan to Angola, Malawi, Uganda, Zimbabwe & South Africa.
